We want to bring those stories to our students and our community and build networks with our incredible alumni founders," states John Hart, the Class of 1922 Professor and head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This sentiment underscores a strategic push to leverage MIT’s unparalleled network of successful innovators. Professor Hart further articulated the department’s broader ambition: "Through the Founder’s Journey class and other new programs, we want to cultivate interest in entrepreneurship among our students and expand opportunities to bring MechE-born technologies to the world." This statement highlights a dual objective: to inspire students towards entrepreneurial careers and to accelerate the commercialization of cutting-edge research originating from the department. The initiative reflects a proactive approach to ensuring that technological breakthroughs translate into tangible solutions and economic impact on a global scale.

MIT’s Enduring Entrepreneurial Legacy

MIT’s reputation as a crucible for innovation and entrepreneurship is well-established and globally recognized. A seminal 2015 report on MIT’s global entrepreneurial impact revealed staggering statistics: more than 30,000 active companies founded by MIT alumni worldwide, collectively employing an estimated 4.6 million people. These ventures generate annual revenues totaling approximately $1.9 trillion, a figure comparable to the tenth-largest economy in the world. This enduring legacy serves as a powerful backdrop for the new MechE initiative, demonstrating the profound and far-reaching influence of MIT-trained minds. Marina Hatsopoulos SM ’93, founding CEO of Z Corp., an early market leader in 3D printing and a co-developer of the new course, emphasized the practical wisdom imparted through the program. She noted that a key aim of the course is to demystify the entrepreneurial process, reassuring students that they are not venturing into uncharted territory. "So much of this has been done before. I want them to understand that this is a well-trod path," Hatsopoulos explained, highlighting the value of learning from predecessors to avoid common pitfalls and leverage proven strategies.

Navigating the Hardware Frontier: The Founder’s Journey Course

The flagship offering in this new initiative is Class 2.S977/2.S979, titled "Founder’s Journey: Launching and Scaling Hardware Startups." Inaugurated in Spring 2025, this course delves into the specific and often complex real-life challenges inherent in building and scaling companies focused on hardware technologies. Unlike software startups, hardware ventures face unique hurdles, including significant capital requirements for prototyping and manufacturing, intricate supply chain management, and longer development cycles. The inaugural class was designed to "find and activate their entrepreneurial energy" by presenting students with a comprehensive overview of the myriad challenges faced by founders and their teams at various stages of developing new hardware-focused companies. Topics covered ranged from critical early-stage considerations like securing seed funding and intellectual property protection to later-stage complexities such as navigating global supply chains, managing manufacturing processes, and scaling distribution networks.

Each weekly session of the course was meticulously structured around a key challenge pertinent to the development and growth of a hardware startup. These challenges were presented by the course instructors, Ken Zolot, a senior lecturer at MIT, and Marina Hatsopoulos, who co-led the class and developed it in collaboration with Professor Hart. Crucially, each week also featured a distinguished guest speaker – an alumni founder who had personally confronted and overcome the very challenge being discussed. These speakers represented a diverse array of frontier technologies, including robotics, sustainable energy solutions, advanced 3D printing, innovative consumer products, and more. Colin Angle ’89, SM ’91, Co-founder of iRobot:
Colin Angle, co-founder and former CEO of iRobot, and now CEO and co-founder of Familiar Machines and Magic, articulated an early-life passion for creation. "This idea that you can create something from nothing, that you can have an idea and not just draw it, but build it and make it real, is something I’ve always loved," he recounted. This foundational drive found a natural home at MIT, where, as Angle noted, "MIT had such a strong, hands-on ethos, and that really, powerfully resonated." His entrepreneurial journey began even before iRobot, observing several multimillion-dollar companies emerge from his Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity house at MIT, an experience that significantly demystified the startup process for him.

Angle launched iRobot from his living room, driven by a grand vision rather than an immediate product concept. "We’re supposed to have robots. So, if not us, who? And if not now, when? It was a magical day," he recalled, emphasizing the conviction behind his venture. While iRobot gained global fame for the Roomba, its autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner, the company’s contributions extended far beyond consumer electronics. iRobot deployed PackBot tactical mobile robots in Afghanistan, credited with saving thousands of lives, and even explored the Great Pyramid in Giza live on National Geographic. Angle underscored the profound satisfaction derived from his entrepreneurial journey: "The joy I have taken from my entrepreneurial journey has been the ability to build bigger things, from building teams to building a company capable of building something far beyond what I could have ever imagined doing myself… we created inventions that no one thought possible, simply because we believed we could." Elise Strobach SM ’17, PhD ’20, CEO and Co-founder of AeroShield:
Elise Strobach, CEO and co-founder of AeroShield Materials, exemplifies the journey from cutting-edge academic research to impactful commercialization. AeroShield, co-founded with Kyle Wilke PhD ’19 and Aaron Baskerville-Bridges SM ’20, MBA ’20, develops super-insulating transparent window inserts. This innovative technology is based on transparent silica aerogels developed by Strobach during her PhD research in Professor Evelyn Wang’s lab. Reflecting on her early research, Strobach admitted, "I wasn’t thinking of myself as an entrepreneur at that time, but looking back, that’s definitely where that seed was planted." Her experience underscores how groundbreaking research can organically lead to entrepreneurial ventures, especially within a supportive ecosystem like MIT.

Strobach champions the freedom inherent in entrepreneurship: "We have the… freedom to find the best problem to solve and to continue to seek the best way to solve that problem." This philosophy drives AeroShield’s mission to address critical energy efficiency challenges. While aerogels were first invented nearly a century ago and commercialized by NASA for space insulation, their hazy blue tint limited broader applications. Strobach’s team engineered a completely see-through aerogel material, opening a vast array of new everyday applications, particularly in sustainable building technologies. The company’s achievements were recently recognized with their work displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, a testament to their innovation. Her advice to budding entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: "You don’t have to know everything to start. You just have to know that this is what you want to do and just get started."

Maxim Lobovsky SM ’11, CEO and Co-founder of Formlabs:
Maxim Lobovsky’s journey into entrepreneurship began with a clear vision for disrupting the 3D printing industry. Already immersed in 3D printing prior to his master’s degree at the MIT Media Lab, Lobovsky, alongside fellow Media Lab graduates David Cranor SM ’11 and Natan Linder SM ’11, founded Formlabs. Their objective was ambitious: to develop a professional-grade 3D printer that was significantly more affordable and user-friendly than the existing market offerings. At a time when industrial 3D printers commanded prices of $100,000 or more, Formlabs introduced a product starting around $3,000, effectively democratizing access to high-quality additive manufacturing.

"We definitely built Formlabs in a classic, disruptive innovation path," Lobovsky explained. This cost reduction was achieved through a combination of ingenious engineering and strategic component sourcing, replacing outdated 1980s technology with modern consumer electronics, such as laser diodes originally developed for Blu-ray Disc players. The early days of fundraising were a "long grind," involving participation in MIT’s 100K competition and numerous pitches to investors, initially with limited success. However, a stroke of serendipity provided their breakthrough. As an admitted "naturally introverted, shy engineer," Lobovsky humorously noted, "a really important lesson [was] that, sometimes, you can get lucky… Sometimes talking loudly at a restaurant is actually a good way to get things going." This "lucky break" occurred when Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Software and a PC industry pioneer, overheard Lobovsky’s pitch at a restaurant and subsequently led Formlabs’ first funding round. Today, Formlabs stands as the world’s largest supplier of professional stereolithography and selective laser sintering 3D printers, a testament to their disruptive vision and execution.

Jon Hirschtick ’83, SM ’83, Co-founder of SolidWorks and Onshape:
Jon Hirschtick, co-founder of two seminal companies in the computer-aided design (CAD) software space, SolidWorks and Onshape, traces his entrepreneurial inclination back to his undergraduate years at MIT. "I had heard about startups, and it sounded like a lot of things that I was drawn to… a sense of being able to realize your vision, express yourself; a sense of excitement, of making money, and even the idea of a chaotic environment," he shared. This early attraction to the dynamic and challenging nature of startups has defined his career spanning over four decades in CAD software development, beginning as an intern at MIT in 1981.

Hirschtick’s motivation has always been rooted in a belief in the utility and impact of his work. "I thought, ‘hey, the world could use this software.’ It’ll be a better place with the software that I envisioned." He refers to CAD as a "meta product design," explaining, "We’re designing a product that other people use to design products, and that’s just really cool to me." His affinity for startups stems from their inherent problem-solving nature, a trait he connects directly to MIT’s ethos. "I think startups just fit me… The excitement, the idea of trying to solve a lot of problems at the same time. MIT is a place of problem-solving… and a startup is a place where there’s lots of problems to solve." While acknowledging that large companies also innovate, Hirschtick posits that "startups are always doing things," implying a perpetual state of agile development and creative solutions. He emphasizes the ubiquity of CAD today, noting that "most anything today that is a manufactured product is modeled in CAD first." For those passionate about product development, building a CAD system offers a unique opportunity to "get involved in the world’s product development."

Hirschtick concluded with a realistic perspective on entrepreneurial risk: "Nobody knows for sure when they start a company whether it’s going to be successful or not. If it were, if there was a way of knowing for sure, then there wouldn’t be all these classes in entrepreneurship. They’d just tell you the secret. There’s always risk. Visions and hallucinations, they look and feel the same. You only find out which is which once you really try to realize them." This candid assessment underscores the inherent uncertainty and courage required to embark on an entrepreneurial journey.
