The project, valued at $13.2 million in funding, is named INSITE, an acronym for INtegrated System for In-situ Testing & Evaluation. The primary objective of this endeavor is to establish a unified, integrated quality assurance (QA) system for additive manufacturing.
The INSITE system aims to revolutionize defect detection by synergistically combining in-situ monitoring capabilities with post-build non-destructive evaluation (NDE) approaches. This integrated strategy is designed to deliver production-ready capabilities to the U.S. supply base, aligning with and advancing Department of Defense (DoD) priorities for reliable AM qualification. Crucially, the program’s focus is not on developing individual sensing or NDE technologies in isolation, but rather on creating a cohesive QA system that harmonizes real-time process monitoring and post-build inspection within a framework that is certifiable for critical applications.
